I've been asked a few questions about the APRS server setup within Uiview lately. While I claim to be no expert, I decided to create a section on the site for the APRS server setup on the website to help others set this up faster. There's no better way to do this than to see it.

First, edit your Uiview32.ini file by closing Uiview down completely. ( Please make a backup first ) This file will be in the main Uiview32 directory. At the bottom of the uiview32.ini file, it will look similar to this ( NO SPACES BETWEEN ENTRIES ):
[IGATE_WINDOW]
LEFT=9105
TOP=435
WIDTH=6765
HEIGHT=5640
MAXIMIZED=FALSE
LOG_INET_TO_RF=TRUE
LOG_RF_TO_INET=TRUE
[APRS_Servers]
SERVER1=rotate.aprs.net:14580 ;Round Robin server feed
SERVER2=first.aprs.net:14580
SERVER3=third.aprs.net:14580
SERVER4=aprswest.net:10152 ;APRSWest Full APRS Feed
SERVER5=aprsca.net:10152 ;Placentia, California Full APRS Feed
SERVER6=AFilter:3033 ;KC9XG's AFilter Program
SERVER7=ahubswe.net:2023 ;Ahub Sweden Full APRS Feed
SERVER8=aprs.net.au:10152 ;Australia Full Feed
SERVER9=aprs.cloud.net.au:10152 ;Victoria, Australia Full Feed
SERVER10=calgary.canaprs.net:10152 ;Calgary, Canada Full Feed
SERVER11=aprsfl.net:10152 ;APRS Florida Full Feed
The BOLD section is where you want to edit. Below the [APRS SERVERS] are the servers in order from 1 11 on my .INI file. Place the underlined server at the top and you can simply cut/paste this into your .INI file. This should be the only server needed. Uiview will connect to this server, and place your connection to the APRS server in order based on how busy easy server is. Do not connect to the core servers by default as this puts too much strain on these servers. Let ROATE.APRS.NET assign it. Save your .INI file and return to re-load Uiview.
Go back to the APRS SERVER pull-down menu and you should see the underlined server at the top. Check the box next to it, and only that box. The other servers can be either deleted or ignored.
Second under the top pull down menu click SETUP, then as the image shows below, click APRS server setup.
That will open the APRS server setup window shown below.
Place the validation code you obtained from UiView's registration in the appropriate place circled in the image above. Failure to do this will prevent UiView from connecting to the APRS servers.
For most UiView users, you can check the boxes as I did. For more detailed instructions on what each feature does, click here (APRS-SERVER-SETUP )
Within the "extra log-on text" field, you tell Uiview how much data to obtain from the server. My string:
filter m/265 p/KA1MZG/KC5RY/KA1MZY/N5LDI/W2CEA/N2196W r/43/-75/110/ r/41/-88/55
The 'filter /m/265" obtains APRS data from within 265 miles of my home station.
The "p/KA1MZG/KC5RY/KA1MZY/N5LDI/W2CEA/N2196W" will feed me data on those specific stations regardless of how far away they are
The "r/43/-75/110/ r/41/-88/55" will feed me data within 110 miles and 55 miles of the LAT/LON provided.
You are limited to how many variables can be used. When finished, click OK.
You may have to re-start Uiview at this point. Once you've made it this far, you should be ready to connect to APRS-IS. On the top menu in Uiview click ACTION, then "connect to APRS server" as indicated in the image below.
UiView will ask you if you wish to "LOG ON when connected". Click YES.
As shown in the image below, UiView will briefly show a connect window and it will disappear. At the top of the screen (circled in black) you will see 6 green boxes. Those boxes indicate it's connected and sending data. For most users, these boxes will remain green. They can change color based on usage however few users should see this.
You are done! But, verify your connection and your variable's:
Below you will see what your connection looks like on the APRS-IS server. Since the server connection is random, you will have to find what server you are connected to based on your location. Simply go to and you can find your connection. At the top of the station connection list, you will see the important fields to check your settings.
Find your station, if it's not listed, check the other servers. Once you find it as shown below with the black highlighted section, you can verify your variables were accepted by the server. If not, check your settings. Even a space, period or other mistake will prevent the server from recognizing it. Once your station has been listed it should send/receive data and you are done with the server setup.
I hope this helps. Please let me know of any mistakes that may be posted or if I'm missing something important or if you still have questions.
